I Broke My Trunk! Provides an excellent opportunity for teachers to incorporate a two person readers’ theatre into their instruction.This poetry form helps the reader to structure their poem and guides them in what information to include, and when they have completed filling in their responses, the poem is generated for them. This activity is beneficial for at- risk readers because it helps them to focus on specific aspects of the book while they are reading and then create a poem to publish. The students could focus on these main points in the book and create their own poem. A 5 W poem would work well for I Broke My Trunk! This poem asks the reader to fill in who, what, where, when, and why.The illustrations are also supportive of the text, thus helping a struggling reader to determine what is written by referring to the illustrations. This book also includes engaging illustrations that expand upon what is written in the text and allows the reader to expand their story knowledge and form a more complete picture of the events in the story. Willem’s cheerful illustrations add to the humor of the book and expand upon the story, beyond what is written, as Elephant spins a tale to tell Piggie just how he broke his trunk.
